Sculpture 1 Assignment 2 Project 3: Stack #1: 7 Cubed

Project 3: Developing construction

Stacked Construction sounded very limiting and  'found materials' stacked to construct daunting… I didn’t feel comfortable with this project but I gave it a bash.

The project was to be comprised of six sculptures. I named each sculpture a "Stack", and I will keep their postings separate to avoid confusion :)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Stack #1: 7³ (Seven cubed)
Comprised of 7 cubes originally, employing 'reversed volume'. Final sculpture to measure approximately 240 - 300 mm³.

What if I were to inverse the stacking? And place a cube within another, and so on - Russian Doll like, but sealed in, inaccessible? Could I portray, through the use of these inwardly stacked cubes, my internal thought processes, affected by outside realities, in reaching a conclusion regarding this sculpture?

Still a Work In Progress: To date incomplete.
I am still balancing the act of 'Seven cubed' versus 'Six cubed'.
A cube is six-sided after all :)
Application of Materials still under review
from, and including, Cube #4 outwards.

Cube #1: Today's Gem
To represent the 'gem', the crystalized thought of the whole process (and in turn, the final sculpture), i.e. beginning with the visionary Ending.

Visionary Beginning and End
Materials: Card, gesso, glue and tiles
Measurements: 34 mm³

Cube #2: Cementing
To represent the final cohesion of the thought processes involved in the concept.
To depict the culmination of all the thought processes involved into one 'concrete' decision, which in turn is to result in the final product.

Drawing (A4 sheet, pen, aquarelle pencils and water). Process. Final.
Materials: Sand, glass, glue, clay, grouting and cement
Measurements: Approx. 60 mm³

Cube #3: Binding
To represent the culmination of the chosen ideas for the concept
Gathering. Yes, accumulating all the relevant thoughts and devices together and moving them around to achieve the best view of them all; seeing if they all measure up as worthy to be placed together, in order to ground the concept.

Drawing (A4 sheet, felt-tip pens, and correction ink). Process. Final.
Materials: Plastic sheeting, metal sheeting, thumb tacks, metal springs and elastic bands
Measurements: Approx. 80 mm³

It is from here onwards that, even though the rudimentary ideas are formed,
the final application of materials will evolve.
Cube #4: To represent the creativity in the concept.
Items meant to create a sense of enactment/involvement, and an understanding that the process, without the drawings, may have existed in a completely different manner, because the concept relied on certain constraints, which I drew on.

Materials: Wood, glue, coloured pencils, paint tubes, wax crayons, plastic, wire, glass, masking tape and paper
Measurements: Approx. 120 mm³

Cube #5: To represent the triggers that began the formulation of the thought process, and
Cube #6: To represent the research undergone prior to and during the thought process
Research triggers ideas of visions, so I will combine these two cubed ideas into one, leaving out or combining some of them. The concept of this layer is depict what I construe research being comprised of, and how this led to triggering the concept: Questions, Foundations, Stepping stones, Starting blocks, Discernment, and Development.

Cube #5:
Materials to date: Plastic, wood, grouting, cement, paper, metal, tiles, wire and glue.
Measurements: Proposed approx. 170 mm³

Cube #6:
Materials to date: Perspex, wood, clay, card, paint and screws.
Measurements: Proposed approx. (was 240 mm³) now 170 mm³

Cube #7: To represent the final outcome of the thought process
Process versus Product, the sculpture. Product to be a simple cube but contained within it, the major intersection of all components used in creating it.

Proposed Materials: Wood, nails or screws, and high gloss enamel paint (black).
Proposed Measurements: ± 240 mm³

All comments and feedback will be greatly appreciated :)
